CLIA Helps Honduran Immigrant Fight for Safe Housing

At CLIA, we believe that everyone deserves safe and dignified housing. A recent Lincoln Journal Star feature highlights how our team helped Marcelino Nunez, a Honduran immigrant, stand up to a negligent landlord and fight for his rights.

This isn’t the first time I’ve had to fight for my rights.
— Marcelino Nunez

Despite working full-time and paying rent, Nunez endured unsafe living conditions—cockroach infestations, leaking appliances, and unresponsive property management. Seeking help, he connected with CLIA and Legal Aid of Nebraska through El Centro de las Américas. With legal guidance, he learned his rights and took action by formally notifying his landlord of required repairs.

Unfortunately, stories like Nunez’s are common among immigrant tenants. Many face housing discrimination and unsafe conditions without knowing their legal protections. Through the UPLIFT Project, CLIA and our partners provide free legal assistance to help immigrants navigate these challenges.
