In the Press: Alicia R. Ramos Gordin on Afghan Asylum Seekers
For many Afghans who fled the Taliban takeover, the U.S. was supposed to be a safe haven. But for those now in Nebraska, that hope is fading as they face one of the toughest asylum courts in the country, where over 96% of cases are denied.
A recent Flatwater Free Press article highlights the plight of Afghan asylum seekers in Omaha, many of whom worked for the former Afghan government or U.S.-backed projects. Some risked treacherous journeys through the Amazon jungle, only to be met with legal limbo and growing fears of deportation.

With new policies restricting asylum and refugee resettlement, many Afghans in Nebraska remain trapped between uncertainty and the fear of returning to a deadly fate.
